Would You Put a Baby in High Heels and Expect Her to Dance Like Shakira?

Would you put your nine-month-old baby in high heels—and expect her to dance like Shakira?”

That’s the question I asked my YouTuber client, Priyanka.

She stared at me like I had three heads.
“Huh? Of course not,” she laughed.

I smiled.
“But that’s exactly what you’re doing right now.”

Priyanka’s face flashed a quick I knew this woman was crazy look before she smoothed it over with her famous million-dollar smile.

The one that made her the darling of millions of followers.

When You’re Hard on Yourself Without Realizing It

“Err… but Marie is in kindergarten, and I don’t let her—” Priyanka started.

“I’m not talking about Marie. I’m talking about you.”

“Me?”

“See, Priyanka, you push yourself to be excellent in everything you do. That’s why you’re the best in your field. Honestly, it’s one of the things I find most inspiring about you.”

She softened, curiosity replacing confusion.

“But when it comes to English,” I continued, “it’s a different game altogether.”

Why Learning English Feels So Frustrating

“Learning to speak a new language is like raising a child.

Right now, your English vocabulary is limited, and you make grammar mistakes—just like a baby learning to talk.

As you keep speaking and practicing, your English-speaking self grows up. You develop a whole new version of yourself who feels natural and confident in English.”

Priyanka leaned in, listening.

“So when you read out a polished script from ChatGPT or memorize complicated sentences…” I paused.

“Exactly!” she jumped in. “Those aren’t my words, and it feels awkward. Like Marie in my heels!”

“Yes! And because you’re so busy focusing on the words, you lose connection with your audience. And when that happens…”

“I forget words, get stuck, panic…” Priyanka’s eyes lit up. “I get it! I’ll do it again—in my own words.”

It took a few tries, but she nailed it.
This time, her million-dollar smile was 100% joyful.

The Big Mistake Most English Learners Make

Here’s the truth: Most English teachers don’t get this.

They focus only on grammar, vocabulary lists, and language apps like Duolingo.

But learning English as an adult isn’t just about cramming rules or memorizing words.

It’s about dissolving the mental blocks that stop you from expressing yourself.

When you’re worried about sounding perfect, you’re like that baby in high heels—wobbly, frustrated, and about to fall.

When you allow yourself to speak simply and naturally, you grow into your best English-speaking self.
